The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Warriors clinched the next stage of the league of public servants, UNTV Cup, after beating the two-time champion Judiciary Magis last Sunday, 86-65.
It was a close fight until the third period when it was tied to 50-50 score but when the foul troubles started to set in in the final period, the Warriors took the opportunity to outscore the Magis with 36 points compared to only 15.
The Magis suffered from the absence of their clutch three-pointer Frederick Salamat and their defense-oriented center Vincent John Puno who could have contributed significantly to win the game.
Named as Best Players of the Game were Ed Rivera with 16 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal and Desiderio Ayson with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block.
While its dynamic duo, Ralph Lansang and Melvin Bangal, scored 18 and 14 points respectively.
DENR Warriors Coach Norlito Eneran said in elation, “Masayang masaya kami at naglalaro kami sa team at iniaalay namin ito sa DENR. Nagpapasalamat ako sa mga assistant coaches ko… we will play as a team at ganoon pa rin ang magiging pagpupursigi namin next game.”
For Judiciary Magis, former Gin Kings Chester Tolomia produced 19 points and 11 rebounds, Herbert John Bergonio stepped up with 12 points and the same as rookie Ryan Dela Cruz.
With the loss, the Judiciary Magis is in danger of being eliminated.
In the other games, the National Housing Authority (NHA) Builders also claimed its ticket for the next round of the tournament as it downed the GSIS Furies with a final score of 80-68.
Also advancing is the Department of Agriculture Food Masters, now with 3-1 win-loss record, after handing the PhilHealth Plus its 3rd loss in the blowout game, 88-65.
With a 1-3 win-loss record, the health insurers must win in their next game against SSS Kabalikat to have a chance to get the 4th slot in Group A.
